The IFSH is an interdisciplinary foundation and research institution at the University of Hamburg, which is institutionally supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The research activities of the IFSH concentrate on analysing current developments and challenges for peace and security with a focus on the European region. The transfer of knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the Institute's work.
We are looking for a Research Assistant (M/F/D) to join us as soon as possible. The position is limited until December 31, 2026, with a workload of 40 hours per month, and is remunerated according to the student assistant pay scale at Universität Hamburg (€16.05/hour). Applicants must hold a first academic degree (e.g. B.A. or equivalent) in either a social science or a technical/natural science field (e.g. Computer Science), and be currently enrolled at a state-recognized university in Germany.
The position supports the research focus on International Cybersecurity, which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and led by Dr. Matthias Schulze. The team currently consists of three academic staff members.
Researching and analyzing data;
Contributing to and editing various publications (in German and English);
Preparing research findings for various formats (e.g. conference presentations and policy briefings).
Interest in the security policy implications of digitalization and the regulation of IT-related risks, as well as experience with (social or technical) analysis of technologies and their societal applications;
Excellent research and analytical skills (e.g. literature searches in relevant databases, documenting and evaluating online search results);
Experience using Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, Word, Excel);
Strong organizational skills and team spirit;
Excellent proficiency in both German and English.
Desirable Skills and Knowledge
Proven experience working in interdisciplinary settings (e.g. through group projects or organizing events);
Initial experience with content management systems;
Basic experience in data analysis (e.g. using Python or R);
Familiarity with reference management tools (e.g. Zotero);
Additional language skills.
