The IFSH is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Hamburg, which is funded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The research activities of the IFSH concentrate on analyzing current developments and challenges for peace and security with a focus on the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian region. The transfer of knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental component of the Institute's work.
For our Berlin office, we are looking to hire a student employee starting on August 15, 2025. The position is initially limited until March 31, 2026. The working time is up to 10 hours per week and will be remunerated according to TV-AVH pay group 2 (EG2). You will support the substantive and organizational work within the joint research project “Strengthening the Norms Against Chemical and Biological Weapons: The CBW Competence Network”, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). You will coordinate closely with the head of the institute’s Berlin office.
The position is part of the BMBF-funded joint project “Comprehensively strengthening norms against chemical and biological weapons: The CBW Competence Network”, which is being carried out jointly by IFSH; the Chair of Public Law and International Law at the Justus Liebig University Giessen; the Leibniz Institute Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research (HSFK); and the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker Center for Science and Peace Research (ZNF) at the University of Hamburg. The project examines how the prohibition norms in the multilateral treaty regimes on chemical and biological weapons, which have come under pressure, can be strengthened.

Basic knowledge in the field of peace and conflict research or arms control – acquired through studies, internships, or work experience (including as a student or research assistant) – is an asset.
