Research for Peace and Security

The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg has been investigating the conditions for peace and security – on a global, regional and local scale – since 1971. The IFSH aims to contribute actively to peace by conducting outstanding and innovative research. Transferring knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the institute's work.

We currently employ around 70 colleagues in research, transfer, teaching and administration at our locations in Hamburg and Berlin. Thanks to funding from the City of Hamburg, we are expanding our science and service teams significantly as part of a growth strategy for the coming years. The IFSH is an international and diverse institution. We combine a culture of openness, agility and short communication channels with the reputation of an established and well-connected research institution.

IFSH is looking for a dedicated individual to join us as “Officer for the Research Information System and Digital Research Services” (m/f/d). This full-time position is based in Hamburg, classified under Pay Group 11 of the TV-AVH collective agreement, and is available to start at the earliest possible date.

In this role, you will work as part of the “Research Services” team at the interface between academia, research services, administration, and IT. Your main focus will be the operational management and further development of IFSH’s research information system. You will ensure that research information is recorded, maintained, and prepared for reports, analyses, and internal services in a reliable, transparent, and usable way.

The position combines technical understanding with a strong service orientation. You will coordinate requirements with researchers, the Head of Research Services, IT, and external service providers; support the day-to-day use of the system; and assist researchers through advice, training, and clear communication of standards, processes, and digital tools. Research data management and Open Science aspects are also part of the role, although to a lesser extent than the research information system. In addition, you will contribute to the development of an internal AI working environment at IFSH. Overall strategic responsibility for the research information system, research data management, and AI governance lies with the Head of the Research Services team.

Your mission

  • Introduction, continuous development, maintenance, and quality assurance of the research information system; the OSIRIS research information system will be introduced at IFSH in 2027, in coordination with the relevant contacts at IFSH and external IT service providers
  • Management and optimization of workflows, data sources, and interfaces within the research information system
  • Ensuring data quality in the research information system in accordance with relevant standards such as KDSF, OpenAIRE, DFG, as well as other internal and external requirements
  • Preparation of research information for annual reports, research plans, accountability reports, and other reporting obligations to funding institutions and ministries; IFSH is currently developing a reporting platform using Microsoft Fabric and Power BI
  • Contribution to the development and implementation of quality standards, workflows, templates, and processes for research data management
  • Participation in the maintenance and further development of IFSH’s internal AI platform in close coordination with IT, Research Services, and external service providers
  • Independent advice and training for researchers on research documentation, research data management, Open Science, and the use of IFSH’s internal AI environment

Your profile

  • Completed university degree, preferably in information science, data science, library science, IT, or a related field
  • Sound knowledge of working with research information systems and academic reporting; additional knowledge of research data management
  • You should cover as broad a range as possible of the following professional requirements. At the same time, we do not expect you to have fully mastered all topics already, provided you are willing to learn.
    • Familiarity with FIS/CRIS systems, metadata standards, FAIR principles, data curation, data protection, and licensing issues
    • Good IT skills and practical experience in developing and maintaining databases; ideally, knowledge of database queries, APIs, and dynamic internet formats
    • Experience in quality assurance processes, data analysis, and the structuring of heterogeneous data and knowledge resources
    • Knowledge, experience, or a strong willingness to learn in the field of generative AI, large language models, prompt engineering, and AI-supported process automation
  • Careful, analytical, and quality-oriented working style, as well as strong IT affinity and willingness to independently familiarize yourself with new digital tools
  • Strong service orientation and good communication skills in dealing with researchers, IT, and external service providers
  • Very good German and English language skills
  • Sense of responsibility in handling sensitive, personal, and unpublished data, as well as identification with the values of Open Science

We offer
